There are ample opportunities and services for Ë®¹ûÅÉ College students interested in a career in health services provided by our Premedicine and Allied Health Professions program.
One-on-One Advising
Several types of advising meetings are offered to our prehealth students. Find the right option for you based on where you are in your advising track.
We also encourage all prehealth students to sign up for our email list and Moodle page to learn about upcoming events and programs, lectures, important deadlines, shadowing and volunteering opportunities, summer programs, fellowships, internships, and post-grad opportunities, zoom links to workshops and lectures, and access to resources.
Prehealth Group Meetings
Typically offered for first-year students and those not already engaged in the prehealth program, these small group meetings are with our program director and prehealth advisor. Students must participate in one of these meetings before scheduling a one-on-one advising appointment with the program director.
Prehealth Advising
Once you have attended a small group meeting, students may participate in this individual prehealth advising meeting with the program director, Dr. Naila Mamoon. Scheduled through Calendly by appointment only, these meetings must happen at least once per semester.
Open-Door Advising & Drop Ins
Once you have attended a small group meeting, students may participate in this individual prehealth advising meeting with the program director, Dr. Naila Mamoon. An alternative to a scheduled meeting in Calendly, these meetings are drop-ins.
Weekly Drop Ins
For quick questions, PAC questions, etc. with the Prehealth Holistic Advisor, drop by. No prerequisites for dropping in.
Applying to Graduate School
Approximately 13-15 percent of Ë®¹ûÅÉ College students in each graduating class apply to medical, dental or health professions school each year and the majority of them are successful in gaining admission to at least one medical or dental school the first time they apply. Explore the support available as you navigate these admission processes.
Annual Health Professional Symposium
Held every year at the end of January and beginning of February, this symposium is encouraged for all prehealth students. Join at any time and return if you need to leave for any reason. The program includes an admissions panel, “Profile of a Competitive Applicant," Health Professions Shuffle (4 concurrent sessions), Keynote Dinner, Young Alumni & Early Professionals Group Discussions, and Skills Workshops.
Events & Workshops
Our program offers frequent skill-building workshops including interviewing, personal statement writing, suturing, first aid/CPR, mentoring, application services tutorials, career spotlights & field exploration, financing medical school, and more.
Dean Visits & School Fairs
Join these in-person and virtual information sessions presented by visiting medical and health professional school deans and program admissions staff.
MCAT & DAT Support
Open to all Ë®¹ûÅÉ College students & recent alumni at a 40% discount! Online courses (live instruction or self-paced). The course fee includes online content resources, study materials, books, practice tests, and instructor.
Beyond the Classroom
Beyond academic coursework, we encourage our students to build core competencies around which programming is focused. Competencies include ethical responsibility to self and others, reliability and dependability, service, social skills, capacity for improvement, resilience and adaptability, cultural competence, oral communication and teamwork.
In addition to clubs and organizations, internships, research, and service, be sure to consider non-health-related experiences such as customer service and hospitality jobs such as food service (waiter, hostess, cashier, etc.) where you have direct interaction with people. These jobs help you to build and strengthen your core competencies.
Prehealth Societies & Student Organizations
Students may explore opportunities for programming, outreach, service and leadership through our clubs and organizations. We encourage you to explore WildcatSync to engage with peers interested in various career fields such as the Premedical Society, Minority Association for Premedical Students (MAPS), Pre-Physician Assistant (PA) Society, Ë®¹ûÅÉ Volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and more.
Internships, Research, Fellowships & Job Shadows
Gain hands-on experiences, clinical and contact hours with patients.
Volunteering & Service
Gain clinical and patient contact hours through volunteering and community services hours. Opportunities may be in-person or virtual. Make sure to keep track of your hours, dates, and locations – you will need this information for medical and health professional school applications at a later date.
