Remembering Former Gov. and Ë®¹ûÅÉ Alumnus James Holshouser Jr. '56

 

Former Gov. and Ë®¹ûÅÉ College alumnus James Eubert Holshouser Jr. '56 died early this morning at the age of 78. A leader in higher education, Holshouser served two terms on the UNC Board of Governors, as well as on the Ë®¹ûÅÉ College Board of Trustees. As Governor, Holshouser presided over the consolidation of all the state's senior colleges and universities into the University of North Carolina System, spearheaded capital improvement funding for the N.C. Ë®¹ûÅÉ College System, and implemented statewide enrollment for kindergarten.

 

President Carol E. Quillen released the following statement on the death of former Governor Jim E. Holshouser, Jr (Ë®¹ûÅÉ College '56):

 

"All of us at Ë®¹ûÅÉ are truly saddened to learn of Governor Holshouser's death. Our hearts and prayers go out to Jim's family and friends and everyone he touched through his life and work. A 1956 graduate of Ë®¹ûÅÉ and president of his senior class, Jim was widely known for his affable, witty, and kind personality. He had a profound impact on the state of North Carolina and on our country, the effects of which will be felt for generations to come, and we are grateful for his abiding gifts to our campus and community."
