Background
My teaching specialties include modern U.S. history and legal history; my research interests focus on legal history in the United States and Latin America.
I enjoy encouraging my students to discover history and teaching them how to understand and communicate their discoveries. I regularly collaborate with my students on conference presentations, documentary films, and scholarly publications. My two books on the legal history of the U.S. South—Law and Society in the South: A History of North Carolina Court Cases, and Race and the Law in South Carolina: From Slavery to Jim Crow—list a total of 150 Ë®¹ûÅÉ student contributors.
